NEW FILM FOOTAGE OF OPERATION MANNA

The city archive of Rotterdam has published new film footage of the food drop missons by the allies over Western Holland, today exactly 66 years ago.

The film was made by Carel van der Zwam, the father of Riet Schoute who recently donated it to the War and Resistance Museum in Rotterdam (source: nu.nl)

On the film you can see the Lancaster bombers of the RAF flying low over Terbregge (near Rotterdam) and dropping their food.

People are gathereing the burlap bags in which the food was dropped. By horse drawn carts the food is broght to river barges to take the food to the distribution points.

During Operation Manna, which lasted from 29th April 1945 until 7th May 1945 the RAF dropped hundreds of tons of food for the starving Dutch population of Western Holland. The American USAAF joined the operation under the name Operation Chowhound.

The Manna Monument at Terbregge

At the exact spot of one of the dropzones overlooking the freeway at Terbregge is the Manna monument located. It symbolizes the belly of an allied bomber filled with food parcels. The monument has been the central location of the Manna / Chowhound commemorations since its unveilling in 2006. One year later the Air Commodore Geddes footpath was opened next to the memorial.

Diary of Norman Coats

May 3 - "Another mercy mission to Holland. We went deeper into Holland today. Very low altitude. I believe I must have waved at everyone in Holland. It is really a shame the ocean being turned into Holland. The great fields of tulips are beautiful. They had, "Thank You" spelled out with rocks. They could see me waving at them because they would point each others attention to it. Some of them had American flags waving them."
